Katrics Tamás – Hungary

Advanced III. level student of the Kassai Equestrian Archery School

My mother was an incredibly good-natured, determined, Christian (Catholic) woman. As a result, she brought me up in the spirit of keeping away from any manifestation what was violent, combative, or somehow a fighting activity. Toy weapons or tales about violence were not available for me. This concept of my mother was not welcomed with enthusiasm by me, as almost all objects in my hand eventually turned into a sword, pistol or a bow, so I could fight and combat in every game.

By the time I was 9-10 the thought of my real interest crystallized in me. I had all the desires to reconstruct the ancient Hungarian fighting style. At this point, naturally, I had no idea about Kassai Lajos, and his well-working Equestrian Archery School he had created decades before. As I am a practical person, I did not start building my career by reading literature but taking horse riding lessons in the riding stables of my village in exchange of cleaning stables and feeding the horses. We could not afford to pay for the lessons but by helping out in the stables I begin horse riding in second grade of primary school.

I started archery at home with a bow made of hazel twig and arrows from reed. The two individual sports could not have been merged in a classical riding school successfully and would not have been accepted, so I had to learn how to ride my bike without my hands holding on, to be able to shoot at the birch logs on the side of our street.

Luckily for me Zoltan Szabó moved into my village; he was a member of the Kassai Equestrian Archery School and I could start training with him. After having trained together for a year he took me to the Kassai-valley where I could see with my own eyes the things I could not even dared to imagine. My first visit there was not clearly successful, but there my fate was sealed at the age of 14, feeling that I arrived home.

From this moment on, I discontinued all other activities, finished all private lessons, and even chose high school based on its location to be able to get home as fast as possible and train and develop the most. Whenever I had the chance I travelled to the Kassai-valley and absorbed the knowledge. This is how my high school years went on, but the question of further studies arose. Having discussed with Kassai Master, it was no doubt that the next step should be the University of Physical Education, physical education teacher and trainer specialization. I finished my education as an Equestrian Archery Specialist Coach. Since than, this specialization has been open to others as well. Naturally, all along I was regularly training and competing in this sport.

After finishing University, the following step was to find a job and develop my own life, as all other youngsters. I completed personal trainer education as well and started to lead trainings and train horses. Life has brought me my first own horse at that time, so things started to move into the direction I had planned from the beginning. I reached a level so I could make presentations with my own horse and train at home on horseback. On one of these performances, I met Levente Lezsák (stunt coordinator) who invited me to movie shooting and introduced this world to me. After oodles of trainings and work I can claim I have turned into a stuntman. With this my life became complete. I can make a living by fencing, fighting, finding myself in the most exciting situations while working together with my horses day by day. In the meantime, a land is being built and beautifies where I can establish my own association to impart this spirituality, school and system I grew up in. It did not only teach me how to shoot successfully from horseback, but also taught me to work, fight and appreciate the strength of a community. I have big plans for the future. I would like my performance in equestrian archery to take me up to the forefront. But what is even more important is to be worthy of representing the Kassai Equestrian Archery School and create a place close to Budapest where this wonderful martial art and sport can be taught with proper professionalism and on high standard.
