Akmal Dahalan – Malaysia
AKMAL DAHALAN – MALAYSIA
My journey has always been defined by two great passions – archery and horses. These two interests were not just hobbies but the very core of my being, guiding me on a life-altering adventure.
I found myself drawn to the art of archery. The art of release of an arrow from a bow, the precision it required, and the sheer magic of hitting the target captured my heart and soul. Equally captivating were the magnificent horses that roamed the fields. Their raw power and elegant movements were a sight to behold, inspiring me in ways words couldn’t express.
As I grew, so did my ambition. I believed through archery and horsemanship, it can bring the best in character to become a true leader, to bring out the best in people through the passions that had come to define my existence. I knew that archery and horsemanship could do more than just build physical and mental fitness. They could nurture a deep connection to tradition and culture as well.
Driven by a vision, I decided to create something extraordinary, a place where archery and horse enthusiasts from all corners of the world could come together. This dream became a reality when I founded Ladang Alam Warisan, a sanctuary in the heart of Malaysia. My vision was to establish it as the ultimate hub for horseback archery in Malaysia, a place where people could immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Malay culture.
It brought me back 10 years ago when I was invited to Kassai Valley. It was an eye-opening experience for me, and I instantly fell in love with how Kassai trained and developed the archers and horses. The philosophy and the greatness of horse archery were defined perfectly for me. I hoped I could do the same and bring the training of Kassai School to Ladang Alam Warisan. With WFEA endorsement, I am one step closer to becoming a reality.
At Ladang Alam Warisan, I organized mounted archery events that celebrated the traditions of horse riding, bare bow archery, and the exquisite artistry of traditional costumes and equipment. These events were more than just sport; they were a symphony of physical prowess, cultural rituals, and a profound appreciation for the intricate details of attire and gear, from bows and arrows to quivers, headgear, girdles, and footwear.
We wore our traditional costumes with pride, paying homage to the heritage we held so dear. Those who gathered to witness our events were treated to an unforgettable sensory experience, filled with the sights and sounds of traditional games, the crafting of bows and arrows, and a mesmerizing showcase of traditional weaponry and attire.
My vision extended far beyond our center’s boundaries. I was determined to solidify Malaysia’s standing as the ultimate destination for horseback archery training and competitions. The successful events we organized on our home soil attracted archers from around the world, etching Malaysia’s name indelibly on the global horseback archery map.
I travelled the world, doing what I loved most. Experienced culture and horseback archery competition and courses, meeting horseback archers around the world, build friendship and networking, learning new skills in archery and horses each and everytime, it’s an endless journey for me.
But it wasn’t just about the competitions or courses. It was about sharing the joy of horseback archery with the world, inspiring more people to take up the sport. My unwavering dedication extended to promoting not only the sport itself but also the beautiful arts and crafts surrounding it. Local artisans poured their hearts into crafting exquisite bows, arrows, and quivers, and Ladang Alam Warisan became the stage for these hidden gems.
As part of our commitment to education and heritage preservation, Ladang Alam Warisan also offered an incredible experiential learning opportunity. Fun shoot activities and short term archery courses for families allowed people of all ages to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of traditional archery, sharing in the thrilling of an ancient practice.
In the end, my story is one of determination, cultural celebration, and an enduring love for the sport. Through Ladang Alam Warisan, I have not only built a legacy but also a bridge that connects people from all corners of the world to the enchanting tapestry of Malay culture and the mesmerizing art of horseback archery. My journey is an evidence to the power of following one’s passions and sharing the treasures of tradition with the world.
