Thierry Descamps – France

I come from a farming family. I had two passions: nature and firearms. I also felt the need to create relationship with animals. I’m dyslexic and I always felt more comfortable with animals than with humans. We had only cows at home, so I started riding cows. I also rode our bull Batiste who was incredibly kind. My father, seeing it, decided to offers me my first horse: Neige. A great story started.

I was studying firearm making, but the farm had some problems, so my father offered me to stop the farm and start tourism. We transformed barns to accommodations, we dug a pond and we bought more horses to do horse riding with tourists. So, I stopped with firearms to come back to my first passion.

Someday, my wife gave me the opportunity to work with a really important horse in my life: Diego. He was doing horse shows and he got an accident. I spent 8 years of my life trying to solve his mental trauma. I got the help of one of the best horsemen in the world. I learned a lot about horses with this experience: observation, patience, to question ourselves, etc…

I achieved to do some shows again with Diego. My theme was the war horse. I was really interested by the strong relation needed to bring a horse into war condition. Be able to take his horse in front of danger even if his natural instinct would ask him to run away. This is a level of trust that really interested me. This theme brought me to take a bow and start shooting from horseback.

To make better shows, I wanted to learn. I discovered horseback archery as a sport with the EOCHA competition in 2008. I met their horseback archers with a very good level. I started taking lessons with them. They were old students of the Kassai School so I often heard the name of Kassai Lajos without knowing him except from videos.

Later, I concentrated only on horsearchery. My two passions were together, it was obvious. In 2012, we brought the sport to the French federation of Horse Riding (FFE). Few years later, the sport grew really fast in our country.

In 2019, I invented and produced a fully automatic rotating target for the Professional Original Kassai System competitions. It helps us a lot for training.

Currently, I concentrate my training on the Kassai-style competition only. I like the spirit, the difficulty and the fixed rules of this competition style.
